one another’s necks.” (1) Then there was a man reviling someone, and I said, “By Allah, if Allah gives me the opportunity against you in battle...” Then, on the day of Siffin, there he was, wearing a coat of mail. He said: “I noticed an opening at the collar of the coat of mail, so I stabbed him and killed him—and it was Ammar ibn Yasir!” He said: “I said, ‘What hands he had! He disliked drinking from a silver-plated vessel, yet he killed Ammar ibn Yasir?!’”
I say: Its chain of transmission is also authentic. The hadith was narrated by al-Hasan ibn Dinar, from Kulthum ibn Jabr al-Muradi, from Abu Ghadiyah, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say...” and he then cited it. It was recorded by Ibn Adi (85/1) and Ibn Abi Hatim in al-Ilal (2/421).
I say: This is among al-Hasan ibn Dinar’s confused reports, for the hadith is not transmitted directly from Abu Ghadiyah from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; Amr ibn al-As stands between them, as in the preceding narration.
2009 — “Allah Most High says: ‘When I test a believing servant of Mine, and he praises Me and bears patiently what I have tested him with, he rises from his bed as free of sins as on the day his mother bore him. The Lord says to the guardian angels: I have confined and tested this servant of Mine, so record for him the reward you used to record for him before this, while he was well.’”
It was recorded by Ahmad (4/123), Abu Nuaym in al-Hilyah (9/309–310), and Ibn Asakir in al-Tarikh (8/8/2), through Ismail ibn Ayyash, from Rashid ibn Dawud, from Abu al-Ashath al-Sanani, who went early to the Mosque of Damascus and met Shaddad ibn Aws, with al-Sunabuhi beside him,
