The ḥadith has yet another route from Thawbān. Abū ʿAlī al-Dārisi relates it, saying: “Ṭalḥah ibn Zayd narrated to us from Thawr, from Rāshid ibn Saʿd, from Thawbān.” Ibn ʿAdī included it ⦗34/1⦘ and remarked, “Abū ʿAlī al-Dārisi — Bishr ibn ʿUbayd — is rejected in ḥadith; he is extremely weak.”
I add: al-Azdī pronounced him a liar, and in al-Mīzān al-Dhahabī gathered several of his reports and said, “These reports are not authentic, and Allah’s help is sought.” He then cited yet another of his narrations and commented, “This one is fabricated.”
In sum, the ḥadith is good, as al-Tirmidhī judged, on account of the corroborating narration from Thawbān — but without the added wording, for I have found no supporting evidence for it. In fact, a report exists that contradicts it, wording: “Provision is not reduced by sin, nor increased by a good deed….” I say: that report is fabricated, as I have demonstrated in Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfa, no. 179, and therefore it is of no weight against the addition just mentioned.
His phrase “the decree (al-qaḍāʾ)” here refers to what has been preordained, were it not for his supplication. And his words “nor does it add to one’s lifespan” mean the lifespan that would have been shortened had it not been for his dutifulness.
155 — “The people outwardly accepted Islam, while ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ truly believed.”
Al-Ruyānī recorded it in his Musnad ⦗9/50/1–2⦘ through the route of Ibn Abī Maryam and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb, both saying: Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us from Mushraḥ ibn Hāʿān, from ʿUqbah, as a marfūʿ report.
