for al-Ṣanʿānī states in Subul al-Salām (3/133):
“Concerning the newborn’s istihlāl, a marfūʿ report—though weak—has been transmitted which says, ‘The istihlāl is sneezing.’ Al-Bazzār is the one who recorded it.”
Now, what al-Bazzār actually narrated is only a ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar with the same wording cited by al-Ṣanʿānī, and in its chain appears Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Baylmān, who is weak, as indicated in al-Majmaʿ. Therefore, this narration is other than the ḥadīth of Jābir and al-Miswar—so take heed.
154 – “Nothing repels the divine decree except supplication, and nothing increases one’s lifespan except righteousness.”
Al-Tirmidhī (2/20), al-Ṭaḥāwī in al-Mushkil (4/169), Ibn Ḥaywayh in his Ḥadīth (3/4/2), and ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī in al-Duʿāʾ (142–143) all transmitted it through the route of Abū Mudūd, from Sulaymān al-Taymī, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Salmān.
Al-Tirmidhī said:
“This ḥadīth is ḥasan and gharīb coming from Salmān. There are two narrators called Abū Mudūd: one is named Fiḍḍah—he is the one who related this ḥadīth and was from Baṣrah; the other is ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Sulaymān, also a Basran. The two were contemporaries in Egypt.”
I say: He (Fiḍḍah) is weak, as Ibn Abī Ḥātim reported from his father (3/2/93). It is most likely that al-Tirmidhī judged the ḥadīth ḥasan because it possesses a corroborating narration from Thawbān, marfūʿ, with the additional wording:
“Indeed, a man may be deprived of provision because of a sin he commits.”
This version was narrated by Ibn Mājah (4022); Aḥmad (5/277, 280, 282); Ibn Abī Shaybah in his Muṣannaf (12/157/2); Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī in Mā Asnada Sufyān (1/43/2); al-Ṭaḥāwī in al-Mushkil (4/169); and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr.
