Yet this additional wording has been established in the hadith of Abu al-Darda, as cited above under no. 1582; taken together, therefore, the hadith is authentic.
1990 — “There are two kinds of military expedition. As for one who seeks Allah’s pleasure, obeys the leader, spends from his finest wealth, and avoids wrongdoing, then all his sleep and wakefulness are rewarded. But whoever goes forth seeking pride, ostentation, and reputation, disobeys the leader, and spreads corruption in the land, will not return with even a neutral balance.”
It was reported by Abu Dawud (no. 2515), al-Nasa’i in the section on military campaigns in al-Kubra (2/52/1), Abd ibn Humayd in al-Muntakhab (15/2), and Ibn Adi (44/2), through Baqiyyah, from Buhayr, from Khalid ibn Ma’dan, from Abu Bahriyyah, from Mu’adh ibn Jabal, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
It was likewise reported by al-Haytham ibn Kulayb in his Musnad (171/1), where Baqiyyah explicitly stated that he heard it directly. He likewise explicitly stated this in the narration of Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm in his Hadith collection (vol. 3, no. 97), and in that of Ibn Asakir (8/512/1). Abu al-Qasim Isma’il al-Halabi also reported it in his Hadith collection (113/2), through Uthman ibn Ata, from his father, from Mu’adh ibn Jabal, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording.
I say: The first chain is good; its narrators are trustworthy, and Baqiyyah explicitly stated direct transmission in the narrations of most of them. Abu Bahriyyah was Abdullah ibn Qays al-Kindi, a trustworthy narrator who lived through both the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods.
1991 — “A ṣa‘ of water is for the ritual bath, and a mudd for minor ablution.”
Al-Tabarani reported it in al-Awsat (3611), and Ibn Adi (69/2), through Hakim ibn Nafi al-Ramli, from Musa ibn Uqbah, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Adi said: “This hadith, with this chain of transmission, is not reliably preserved from Musa ibn Uqbah.” Al-Tabarani said: “No one narrated it from Musa except Hakim.”
