indicate that it has a basis. Although the last of them is attributed to the Companion, a statement such as this is not made on the basis of personal opinion, as is well known.
The hadith has a fourth route from Anas, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, but with the wording: “Whoever performs forty prayers in my mosque without missing a single prayer will be granted immunity from the Fire, salvation from punishment, and freedom from hypocrisy.” However, it is rejected with this wording, because it differs from its wording in the preceding routes and because there is an unknown narrator in its chain of transmission. For this reason, I included it in the other book (364).
1980 — “Ali will settle my debt.”
It has been reported from Anas ibn Mālik, Ḥabashī ibn Junādah, and Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ.
- As for the hadith of Anas, it is narrated by Ḍirār ibn Ṣurad Abū Nuʿaym: al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, saying: I heard my father relate from al-Ḥasan, from Anas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said—and he then cited it. Al-Bazzār recorded it (p. 268) and said: “This hadith is rejected.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in Zawāʾid al-Bazzār: “Ḍirār ibn Ṣurad is very weak.”
I say: Yet he was too lenient in al-Taqrīb when he said: “Truthful, but prone to misconceptions and errors.” Al-Ḥasan here is al-Baṣrī. He practised tadlīs and narrated it with an ambiguous “from” formula; moreover, he may have received it from some abandoned narrators. Indeed, Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Rajāʾ al-Zubaydī narrated it from Maṭar, from Anas, with the same wording. Al-Daylamī recorded it in Musnad al-Firdaws (2/297, abridged edition).
