“O people, this is part of your booty.” No. 985.
1974 — “Indeed, no offender is held accountable except for his own offense. No father shall be held accountable for his child, nor a child for his father.”
Ibn Mājah (2/147) and Aḥmad (3/498–499) recorded it from Shabīb ibn Gharqadah, from Sulaymān ibn ʿAmr ibn al-Aḥwaṣ, from his father, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say during the Farewell Pilgrimage—and he related it. Aḥmad does not include the introductory particle.
In al-Zawāʾid, he said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic, and its narrators are trustworthy.” This is what he said, but Sulaymān ibn ʿAmr is not a well-known narrator; for this reason, al-Khulāṣah says: “He has been deemed trustworthy.” Al-Taqrīb says: “Acceptable.” Thus, a narrator of this rank transmits a good hadith when he is not alone in reporting it. The remaining narrators in the chain are trustworthy transmitters found in the Ṣaḥīḥ collections.
It has a corroborating report with the wording: “No soul bears responsibility for another soul.” This has preceded under no. 988. It also has another corroborating report from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, with the wording: “Do not revert to disbelief after me, striking one another’s necks; and no man shall be held accountable for the crime of his father or for the crime of his brother.”
Al-Nasāʾī recorded it (2/177) through the route of Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, and through the route of Sharīk, both from al-Aʿmash, from Muslim, from Masrūq. The former said, “from ʿAbd Allāh,” whereas the latter said, “from Ibn ʿUmar,” who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he related it. Al-Nasāʾī said: “This is an error; the correct version is mursal.” He then cited it through the route of Abū Muʿāwiyah and Yaʿlā, from al-Aʿmash with this chain as a mursal report; neither of them mentioned ʿAbd Allāh.
