“As for what belongs to me and the clan of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, it is yours.” The Emigrants said, “What belongs to us belongs to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,” and the Helpers said the same. ʿUyaynah ibn Badr said, “As for what belongs to me and the clan of Fazārah, no.” Al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis said, “As for me and the clan of Tamīm, no.” ʿAbbās ibn Mirdās said, “As for me and the clan of Sulaym, no.” The two tribes said, “You have lied; rather, it belongs to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said: “O people, return their women and children to them. Whoever retains anything from the booty will be entitled from us to six allotted shares from the first booty Allah grants us.”
He then mounted his camel, and the people clung to him, saying, “Divide our booty among us!” They pressed him back against a thorn tree, which snatched away his cloak. He said: “O people, return my cloak to me. By Allah, if I had livestock equal in number to the trees of Tihāmah, I would distribute it among you. You would not find me miserly, cowardly, or deceitful.”
Then he approached his camel, took a tuft of wool from its hump, placed it between his index and middle fingers, and raised it, saying: “O people, I have no share…” etc.
In al-Muntakhab (2/301), he also attributed this final passage to al-Nasāʾī. I found it in his Sunan (2/178) through this route, but without his words, “So return…” etc.
Aḥmad also recorded the hadith (2/218) through another route from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb related it to me in full, but without the words, “He then mounted his camel…” etc. This is a good chain of transmission, in which Ibn Isḥāq explicitly stated that he received the report directly; thus, the suspicion of his concealment in transmission is removed. The hadith also has corroborating reports, which were referred to earlier under the hadith:
