I say: Yet Aḥmad also recorded it (5/326): Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān related to us: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh related to us, from Saʿīd ibn Yūsuf, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salām, with similar wording. This is how he presented it immediately after the first chain of transmission. This constitutes a strong corroborating route for Ibn Abī Maryam’s narration from Abū Salām. However, Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr practised tadlīs; indeed, he did not hear from Abū Salām, whose name was Manṣūr, as al-ʿIjlī stated.
Moreover, Saʿīd ibn Yūsuf, who narrated from him, is weak, as stated in al-Taqrīb and elsewhere. Makḥūl also narrated it, with similar wording, from Abū Salām, from Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit. It also has other routes from ʿUbādah, as well as a corroborating report from the hadith of Ibn ʿAmr, which follows immediately after this. Thus, the hadith is good at the very least. Indeed, it is authentic; its wording has already preceded through the route referred to under no. 1942.
1973 — “O people, I have no share of this booty—not even of this tuft of hair—except the fifth; and the fifth is returned to you. So return the thread and the needle, for misappropriation from the spoils will bring upon those who commit it shame, Fire, and disgrace on the Day of Resurrection.”
Aḥmad recorded it (2/184) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I was present with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when delegations from Hawāzin came to him and said, “O Muḥammad, we are your people and kinsfolk. Show us favour, as Allah has shown favour to you, for a calamity has befallen us whose severity is not hidden from you.”
He said: “Choose between your women, your property, and your children.”
They said: “You have given us a choice between our honour and our wealth; we choose our children.”
He said: “Whatever belongs to me and to the clan of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib is yours. Once I have prayed Ẓuhr, say: ‘We seek the intercession of the Messenger of Allah with the believers, and the intercession of the believers with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, concerning our women and our children.’”
So they did so. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
