This is an authentic chain according to Muslim’s criteria, and Muslim recorded through it in his Sahih the two hadiths referred to above. This hadith has also been narrated in other wordings through numerous chains from Muʿāwiyah and others. See “A group will continue …,” no. 1958.
1972 — “This tuft of hair is from your spoils. I have no share in them beyond my share alongside you, except for the fifth; and that fifth is returned to you. So hand over the needle and thread, and what is greater or smaller than that, and do not misappropriate from the spoils, for such misappropriation is a source of Fire and disgrace for those who commit it in this world and the Hereafter. Fight, for Allah’s sake, those near and far; do not fear, for Allah’s sake, the blame of any blamer; uphold Allah’s legal penalties whether settled or travelling; and strive in the way of Allah. For jihad is a mighty gate among the gates of Paradise, through which Allah, mighty and majestic, delivers people from grief and distress.”
Ahmad recorded it (5/314, 316, and 326) through several chains from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Maryam, from Abū Salām al-Aʿraj, from al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdī Karib al-Kindī, who said that he sat with ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, Abū al-Dardāʾ, and al-Ḥārith ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Kindī. They discussed the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, whereupon Abū al-Dardāʾ said to ʿUbādah: “O ʿUbādah, tell us the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during such-and-such a campaign concerning the fifths.”
ʿUbādah said: “During one expedition, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led them in prayer facing a camel from the undivided spoils. When he concluded the prayer, he stood up, took a tuft of hair between his fingers, and said: ‘This is from your spoils …’” He then related the hadith.
This is a weak chain of transmission. Al-Haythamī said (5/338): “Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains Abū Bakr ibn Abī Maryam, who is weak.”
