He said: “And may Allah do you good likewise.” Then Kaʿb sprang up and said: “O Messenger of Allah, permit me to answer him.” He said: “Are you the one who says, ‘Sakhīnah has sought to contend with its Lord, but whoever contends with the Supreme Overpowerer shall surely be overcome’?” He replied: “Yes. I said, O Messenger of Allah:
‘Sakhīnah has sought to contend with its Lord, but whoever contends with the Supreme Overpowerer shall surely be overcome.’”
He said: “Indeed, Allah has not forgotten that for you.” Then Ḥassān rose and said: “O Messenger of Allah, permit me to answer him.” He stuck out his black tongue and said: “O Messenger of Allah, permit me; if You wish, I shall tear waterskins open with it.” He then related the hadith and said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
That is what they both said. However, Jābir was Ibn Yazīd al-Juʿfī, and he was weak. Yet Simāk ibn Ḥarb corroborated him in mursal form, thus strengthening it. The hadith has also been narrated in abbreviated form through other routes from al-Barāʾ. See: “Satirize the polytheists,” which has preceded under no. 801.
1971 — “A group from my community will continue to be manifest upon the truth. Those who oppose them will not harm them, until Allah’s command comes while they remain dominant over the people.”
Aḥmad recorded it (4/99): ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿĀmir al-Yaḥṣubī, who said: I heard Muʿāwiyah speaking and saying: “Beware of the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, except a hadith that was known in the time of ʿUmar; for ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, was the most fearful of people regarding Allah, the Exalted. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say—”
I say: He then mentioned three hadiths, of which this is one. The second is: “I am only a custodian ...” The third is: “When Allah wills good for someone, He grants him understanding ...” Both have preceded under nos. 971 and 1194.
