1969 — “O Allah, make him a guiding guide, rightly guided; guide him and guide others through him.” That is, Muʿāwiyah.
Al-Turaqfī recorded it in his Hadith collection (fol. 45/1): “Abū Mushir related to us: Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz related to us, from Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿUmayrah al-Muzanī”—Saʿīd said: “He was one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him”—“from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said concerning Muʿāwiyah...” and then cited it.
Al-Bukhārī recorded it through this route in al-Tārīkh (4/1/327), as did al-Tirmidhī (2/316, Bulaq edition) and Ibn ʿAsākir in Tārīkh Dimashq (2/133/1 and 16/243/2). Al-Tirmidhī said: “A good, singular hadith.”
I say: All its narrators are trustworthy and are among Muslim’s narrators; it therefore deserved to be graded authentic. Perhaps al-Tirmidhī limited himself to grading it good because Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz had become confused before his death, as Abū Mushir and Ibn Maʿīn stated. Yet it appears that Abū Mushir received this hadith from him before that confusion; otherwise, he would not have narrated it from him had he heard it while he was in that state—especially since Abū Ḥātim said: “Abū Mushir ranked Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz above al-Awzāʿī.”
I said: Could he have ranked him above Imam al-Awzāʿī while narrating from him after he had become confused?!
A group also corroborated him:
-
Ibn Muḥammad al-Dimashqī narrated it: “Saʿīd informed us; Rabīʿah ibn Yazīd informed us; I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿUmayrah al-Muzanī say: ‘I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say concerning Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān...’” and then cited it. Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Tārīkh, as did Ibn ʿAsākir.
-
Al-Walīd ibn Muslim, together with Muḥammad ibn Marwān—perhaps he was Marwān ibn Muḥammad—said: “He informed us...”
