- “If you remained as you are when you are with me in private, the angels would shake hands with you, so visibly that they would shade you with their wings. But there is a time for this and a time for that.”
Abū Yaʿlā (2/786) related it: Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar informed us, from Qatādah, from Anas, who said: The Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “O Messenger of Allah, when we are with you, we find within ourselves what pleases us; but when we return to our families and mingle with them, we find ourselves changed.” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said … and he mentioned it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among those relied upon by the two Shaykhs, apart from this Muḥammad, who is Ibn Mahdī al-Aylī. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (4/1/106): “He narrated from Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī, and Abū Zurʿah narrated from him.”
I say: Abū Zurʿah’s teachers are trustworthy; therefore, the chain of transmission is authentic. I then found that Ibn Ḥibbān also related it (2493) through Abū Qudayd, ʿUbayd Allah ibn Faḍālah, who said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated it to us. This is a strong corroboration for Ibn Mahdī, for Ibn Faḍālah is trustworthy and precise, as stated in al-Taqrīb.
The hadith also has a supporting narration from Ḥanẓalah al-Usaydī, which has preceded under no. 1948.
- “Allah will judge between His creatures—the jinn, human beings, and animals. On that day, He will exact retribution for the hornless animal from the horned one, until no claim remains between any one of them and another. Then Allah will say, ‘Become dust!’ At that point the disbeliever will say, ‘If only I had been dust!’”
Ibn Jarīr related it in his exegesis (30/17–18) through Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ al-Madanī, from Yazīd ibn Ziyād, from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, from a man of the Anṣār, from Abū Hurayrah, tracing it back to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with this wording.
