And al-Tirmidhī said: “A singular, authentic hadith.”
I say: It meets al-Bukhārī’s conditions. Aḥmad also transmitted it (3/322 and 339) through Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, in a similar but abbreviated wording. It meets Muslim’s conditions.
1948 — “By Him in whose hand is my soul, if you were to remain as you are when you are with me and engaged in the remembrance of Allah, the angels would shake hands with you upon your beds and in your streets. But, O Ḥanẓalah, there is a time for this and a time for that”—three times.
Muslim (8/94–95), al-Tirmidhī (2/83–84), Ibn Mājah (2/559), and Aḥmad (4/178 and 346) transmitted it through Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Ḥanẓalah al-Usaydī—who was one of the Messenger of Allah’s scribes—who said: Abū Bakr met me and asked, “How are you, O Ḥanẓalah?” I said, “Ḥanẓalah has become a hypocrite!” He said, “Glory be to Allah! What are you saying?” I said, “When we are with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he reminds us of Hell and Paradise until it is as though we see them with our own eyes. But when we leave the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, we become occupied with our wives, children, and estates, and we forget much.” Abū Bakr said, “By Allah, we experience the same thing.”
So Abū Bakr and I went forth until we entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I said, “Ḥanẓalah has become a hypocrite, O Messenger of Allah!” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “What do you mean by that?” I said, “When we are with you, you remind us of Hell and Paradise until it is as though we see them with our own eyes. But when we leave you, we become occupied with our wives, children, and estates, and we forget much.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then repeated the above. The wording is Muslim’s. Al-Tirmidhī said: “An authentic hadith.”
