Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Ibn ʿAsākir likewise transmitted it (17/493/2) through another route from ʿAbd Allāh. This Ibrāhīm was a truthful narrator among al-Bukhārī’s narrators.

Accordingly, I am fully reassured by al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī’s aforementioned judgment that it is a good hadith—that is, good due to supporting evidence. This is especially so because some of its passages have corroborating reports. The fourth passage, for example, is supported by a report in al-Ṭabarānī’s al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (no. 368), while a supporting report for the fifth has preceded under no. 1851. The hadiths conveying its meaning are numerous; indeed, they have reached the level of mass transmission.

1945 — “I marvel at the patience and generosity of my brother Joseph—may Allah forgive him—when he was sent for to be consulted about the vision. Had I been in his place, I would not have done so until I had left. And I marvel at his patience and generosity—may Allah forgive him—when he was summoned to leave, yet he did not leave until he had informed them of his excuse. Had I been in his place, I would have hastened to the door.”

Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it (no. 11640) through Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributed to the Prophet, with this wording. He added: “Had it not been for that statement, he would not have remained in prison, having sought relief from someone other than Allah—namely, his words: ‘Mention me to your master.’” Ibn Jarīr and others narrated it through this same route.

I say: This chain of transmission is very weak. This Ibrāhīm is al-Khūzī, an abandoned narrator of hadith, as stated in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (7/40) and al-Taqrīb. For this reason, Ibn Kathīr said: “This hadith is very weak.” He also attributed it to ʿAbd al-Razzāq: Ibn ʿUyaynah informed us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from ʿIkrimah, with this report as a mursal narration; he did not mention Ibn ʿAbbās in its chain of transmission, nor the concluding words, “Had it not been for that statement …” This is the sound version. Rather, it is authentically reported only with different wording.
