1942 — “He would take a tuft of wool from the side of a camel from the spoils of war and say: ‘I have no more right to it than any one of you.’ Then he would say: ‘Beware of misappropriating war booty, for such misappropriation will bring disgrace upon its perpetrator on the Day of Resurrection. So hand over even the thread and the needle, and whatever exceeds them. Wage jihad in the cause of Allah, whether near or far, at home or while travelling, for jihad is a gate of Paradise; it delivers its practitioner from worry and grief. Establish Allah’s fixed legal penalties upon those near and far, and do not let the blame of any blamer deter you in the cause of Allah.’”
It was recorded by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad (5/330) and al-Ḍiyāʾ in al-Mukhtārah (67/1), through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim al-Maflūj: ʿUbaydah ibn al-Aswad narrated to us, from al-Qāsim ibn al-Walīd, from Abū Ṣādiq, from Rabīʿah ibn Nājidh, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, attributed to the Prophet. Ibn Mājah (2540) recorded the final passage of it concerning the establishment of the legal penalties.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from this Rabīʿah, whom only al-Ḥāfiẓ declared trustworthy, following Ibn Ḥibbān. However, Aḥmad (5/316 and 326) and Ibn ʿAsākir (8/428/1) narrated it through al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdī Karib, who said: ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit informed us of it. This route through al-Miqdām, together with its wording, will follow under no. 1972.
1943 — “Drink cow’s milk, for they graze on every kind of tree, and it is a cure for every illness.”
Al-Ḥākim recorded it (4/403) through Isrāʾīl, from Rukayn ibn al-Rabīʿ, from Qays ibn Muslim, from Ṭāriq ibn Shihāb, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, attributed to the Prophet with this wording. Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī concurred.
