It has another corroborating report, narrated by Ibn ʿAdī (149/1) from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us from Zuhayr, from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, as a Prophetic report.
I say: This ʿAbd al-Wahhāb is a liar, as Abū Ḥātim stated. In sum, the hadith is good by virtue of the corroborating report from Anas. And Allah knows best. It also has another corroborating report, through Darrāj, from al-Haytham, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, as a Prophetic report, with the wording: “Winter is the springtime of the believer: its night is long, so he spends it in prayer; and its day is short, so he fasts it.” This chain contains weakness. It was reported by Aḥmad and others, and has been cited in al-Rawḍ al-Naḍīr under the hadith of Anas mentioned shortly before.
1923 — “Leave my Companions alone. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, even if you were to spend gold equal to Mount Uḥud, or equal to the mountains, you would not attain the measure of their deeds.”
Aḥmad reported it (3/266): Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us; Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl narrated to us from Anas, who said: “There was a dispute between Khālid ibn al-Walīd and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf. Khālid said to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ‘Do you hold yourselves above us on account of the days in which you preceded us?!’ We were then informed that this had been mentioned to the Prophet, so he said it.”
I say: This is an authentic chain according to al-Bukhārī’s criteria. Zuhayr is Ibn Muʿāwiyah. The hadith also has a corroborating report narrated by Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm, from Abū Khālid, from al-Shaʿbī, from Ibn Abī Awfā, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf complained to the Prophet about Khālid ibn al-Walīd, so he said: “Why do you harm a man who was among those at Badr? Even if you were to spend …” the hadith.
