al-Baghawī): Mūsā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥayyān narrated to us: Abū Qutaybah Salm ibn Qutaybah informed us: al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Faḍālah narrated to me, from Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim, from Abū al-Malīḥ ibn Usāmah, from his father, attributing it to the Prophet. He said: “No one narrated it from Abū al-Malīḥ except Sālim, and no one narrated it from him except al-Mufaḍḍal. Abū Qutaybah alone narrated it.”
I say: He is trustworthy and among al-Bukhārī’s narrators. However, al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Faḍālah is weak; he is Abū Mālik al-Baṣrī, the brother of Mubārak. As for Mūsā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥayyān, this is how it appears in the original, with a yāʾ, the letter with two dots beneath. It likewise appears as “Ḥayyān” in al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl (4/1/161), and it is likewise found in the Khānjī edition of al-Mīzān, as is implied by what appears in Lisān al-Mīzān—though a typographical error occurs there. In the Bajāwī edition of al-Mīzān, however, it appears as “Jayyān,” apparently because he was misled by a copy of al-Mīzān which itself explicitly states that this is erroneous. Its wording is: “Ibn al-Azhar al-Ṣarīfīnī supplied its dots as a jīm in some places, and thus erred.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar confirmed this, adding: “The recognized form has the undotted letter.”
Then, concerning this Ibn Ḥayyān, al-Dhahabī said: “Abū Zurʿah declared him weak, but did not declare him abandoned.” Yet he was not alone in narrating it, as indicated by al-Ṭabarānī’s preceding statement and as will be established below. I have not identified Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim, and al-Haythamī deemed the report defective on account of him. He said (3/158): “Al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī, in al-Kabīr and al-Awsaṭ, narrated it. Its chain includes Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sālim, for whom I found no biographical notice; the rest of its narrators have been declared reliable.”
This is how it appears there, as “Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh,” with ʿAbd Allāh in its full form. It also appears thus in al-Awsaṭ, as mentioned above, and in Majmaʿ al-Baḥrayn (1/102/2). In al-Mizzī’s Tahdhīb, however, it appears in the list of those who narrated from
