Sixth: From ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “Make it known that you expect nothing from people, and ask them for your needs as little as possible. Beware of anything for which an apology must be made. When you perform minor ablution, do it thoroughly; and when you pray, pray as one bidding farewell.”
Al-Dūlābī recorded it in al-Kunā (2/75) in suspended form, saying: Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl al-Tabūdhakī mentioned that Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to us: “I heard Muʿāwiyah ibn Qurrah say: ʿUmar said ...”
I say: I have not identified this Jarīr. In sum, however, the hadith is strong on account of these supporting reports.
1915 — “Perform the Maghrib prayer at sunset; hasten to perform it before the stars rise.”
Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it (nos. 4058 and 4059) through two routes from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, who said: Aslam Abū ʿImrān narrated to me that he heard Abū Ayyūb relate it from the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; its narrators are trustworthy. Aḥmad (5/415) and al-Dāraquṭnī (1/260, Egypt) also recorded it through Ibn Lahīʿah, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, with similar wording. Aḥmad (5/421) also narrated it through Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, from him, with the exception that he said: “From a man whose name he did not mention.” Al-Haythamī said (2/310): “Aḥmad narrated it from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from a man, from Abū Ayyūb; the rest of its narrators are trustworthy. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from Aslam Abū ʿImrān, from Abū Ayyūb, and its narrators are trustworthy.” It seems that he had not come across Aslam’s narration in Aḥmad; otherwise, he would not have overlooked it.
