I say: He died in 18 AH, and ʿAtaʾ ibn Yasar was born a year after his death. For this reason, al-Hafiz judged it defective in al-Fath (6/9) on account of a break in the chain. Ahmad (5/232) also narrated it in abbreviated form through Zuhayr ibn Muhammad: Zayd ibn Aslam informed us of it.
There is another discrepancy in the chain of transmission of the hadith which al-Tirmidhi did not mention. Al-Bukhari narrated it (6/9–10 and 13/351) through Hilal ibn ʿAli, from ʿAtaʾ ibn Yasar, from Abu Hurayrah, attributed to the Prophet, with wording similar to the hadith of ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, except that he did not say, “Let people continue to act.” Its meaning occurs in the well-known hadith of Muʿadh, which includes: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, should I not give the people glad tidings?’ He said: ‘Do not give them glad tidings, lest they become reliant upon it.’” Al-Bukhari narrated it in “Knowledge,” and Muslim in “Faith” (1/43). It also appears in Mukhtasar Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 85.
1914 — “Pray as one bidding farewell, as though you see Him; for even if you do not see Him, He sees you. Despair of what people possess, and you will live in contentment; and beware of that for which one must apologize.”
It was narrated in al-Tarikh (3/2/216), al-Mukhallis’s al-Fawaʾid al-Muntaqah (6/74/2), al-Tabarani’s al-Awsat (4588), al-Qudaʿi’s Musnad al-Shihab (80/2), al-Bayhaqi’s al-Zuhd (62/1–2), the judge al-Sharif Abu ʿAli’s Mashyakhah (1/173/2), Ibn al-Najjar’s Dhayl Tarikh Baghdad (10/16/1), and al-Diyaʾ al-Maqdisi’s al-Mukhtarah, from Abu ʿAli al-Hasan ibn Rashid ibn ʿAbd Rabbih, who said: Nafiʿ informed us: I heard Ibn ʿUmar say: “A man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me a hadith and make it concise.’ The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him …” Then he mentioned it. Al-Diyaʾ said:
