1908 — “Charity given in secret extinguishes the Lord’s wrath.”
It has been narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far, Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, Umm Salamah, Abu Umamah, Mu‘awiyah ibn Haydah, and Anas ibn Malik.
- As for the hadith of ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far, it is narrated by Asram ibn Hawshab: Qurrah ibn Khalid narrated to us from Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, who said: I said to ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far, “Relate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” He then mentioned it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu‘jam al-Saghir (p. 214) and al-Awsat (1/93/1), and al-Quda‘i in Musnad al-Shihab (folio 11/1). Al-Tabarani said: “No one narrated it from Qurrah except Asram.”
I say: He is an accused narrator, as Ibn al-Muhibb stated in the margin of al-Quda‘i. Al-Hakim also recorded it through his route (3/568), but said concerning it: “Ishaq ibn Wasil narrated to us from Abu Ja‘far, with it.” Al-Hakim made no comment on it, while al-Dhahabi said: “I believe it to be fabricated, for Ishaq is abandoned and Asram is accused of lying.” In Ibn al-Mulaqqin’s al-Khulasah (folio 115/1), it states: “Al-Hakim narrated it, and its chain of transmission is severely rejected.”
- As for the hadith of Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, it is narrated by al-Harith al-Numayri from Abu Harun al-‘Abdi, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, attributed to the Prophet with this wording. Al-‘Askari recorded it in Kitab al-Sara’ir (179/1–2).
