The martyrs were mentioned in the presence of Abū ʿAnabah al-Khawlānī, and they mentioned those who die of an abdominal illness, those who die of plague, and women who die in childbirth. Abū ʿAnabah became angry and said: “The Companions of our Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, narrated to us from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said...” He then cited it.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission; its narrators are trustworthy and known, apart from Abū ʿAnabah al-Khawlānī. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (4/2/418–419): “He was not a Companion; rather, he belonged to the first rank of the Successors among the people of Syria.” He then mentioned that a number of trustworthy narrators besides al-Alhānī narrated from him. Others, however, included him among the Companions, and al-Ḥāfiẓ deemed more likely, in al-Iṣābah, the view of Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā: “He lived through the Age of Ignorance and survived until the caliphate of ʿAbd al-Malik. He was among those who accepted Islam at the hands of Muʿādh while the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was still alive.”
1903 — “The believer’s honor lies in his night prayer, and his dignity in being independent of what people possess.”
Al-ʿUqaylī narrated it in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (p. 127): Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Dāwūd ibn ʿUthmān al-Thaghrī narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAmr al-Awzāʿī narrated to us from Abū Muʿādh, from Abū Hurayrah, tracing it back to the Prophet. He said: “Dāwūd narrated spurious reports from al-Awzāʿī and others.” He then cited this hadith and said: “It is narrated from al-Ḥasan and others as their own statement, and it has no basis as a report with a continuous chain to the Prophet.” Abū Muḥammad al-Ḍarrāb also narrated it through this route in Dhamm al-Riyāʾ (292–293).
Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Malik differed from them, saying: Yaḥyā ibn ʿUthmān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; Abū al-Minhal Ḥubaysh ibn ʿUmar al-Dimashqī—who, I was told, used to cook for al-Mahdī—narrated to me: Abū ʿAmr al-Awzāʿī narrated to me the same report.
