varieties of food and varieties of clothing, and who speak in an affected manner.”
It was narrated by Aḥmad in al-Zuhd (Asceticism) (p. 77); Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in al-Jūʿ (Hunger) (fol. 9/1); Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (The Complete) (fol. 249/1); and Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Abnūsī in al-Fawāʾid (Benefits) (fols. 14/1–2), from whom Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it in al-Tārīkh (History) (9/60/2), through ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar al-Anṣārī, who said: Al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated to me that Amat Allah Fāṭimah bint al-Ḥusayn narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said—then he mentioned it.
I say: This is a good chain; its narrators are trustworthy, except that it is mursal (with a missing link). Fāṭimah bint al-Ḥusayn’s narration from her father, al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and from her grandmother, Fāṭimah al-Zahrāʾ, is mursal. It also has a mursal corroborating report: Ibn al-Mubārak said in al-Zuhd (Asceticism), no. 758: Al-Awzāʿī informed us, from ʿUrwah ibn Ruwaym, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said—then he mentioned it.
I say: This is a mursal report with an authentic chain. It has also been narrated with a connected chain: al-Ḥākim narrated it (3/568) through Aṣram ibn Ḥawshab, who said: Isḥāq ibn Wāṣil al-Ḍabbī narrated to us from Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, who said: We said to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib, “Tell us what you heard from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace...” He said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say...” He then mentioned several hadiths, of which this was one, adding: “And they ride various kinds of mounts.”
Al-Ḥākim made no comment on it, but al-Dhahabī criticized it, saying: “I think it is fabricated, for Isḥāq is abandoned and Aṣram is accused of lying.” In Isḥāq’s biographical notice in al-Mīzān, he stated that Isḥāq was one of the utterly discredited narrators; that this hadith was among his objectionable reports; and that it was narrated by Aṣram, who was not trustworthy. However, al-Munāwī quoted al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī as saying:
