“A singular, authentic report.”
I say: Its chain is sound. All its narrators are trustworthy narrators of Muslim, except ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn al-ʿAbbās, who is truthful but inclined toward Shiism, as stated in al-Taqrīb.
1885 — “There will be mines to which the worst people will come.”
Aḥmad narrated it (5/430) through a man from Banū Sulaym, from his grandfather: “He came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with some silver and said, ‘This is from a mine belonging to us.’ The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then said …” and he cited it.
I say: Its narrators are trustworthy narrators of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, apart from the man, who is unnamed. The hadith also has a supporting narration related by Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (4/1520): ʿAmr ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated to us: My father informed us; ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar informed us, saying: I heard Abū al-Jahm al-Qawwās relate to my father—he was a Persian man, said—thus in the text, though perhaps it means heavy—of tongue, and he was among the associates of Abū Hurayrah. He said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: “A mine will appear in the land of Banū Sulaym, called Firʿawn or Firʿān—this being in Abū al-Jahm’s pronunciation—near al-Suwāʿ [sic]. The worst people will go out to it, or the worst people will be gathered to it.”
I say: Its narrators are known and trustworthy, apart from Abū al-Jahm al-Qawwās. This is how the name appears in the original, without diacritical pointing; perhaps al-Qawwās was a designation derived from his making or selling bows. I have not identified him. Among his contemporaries was Sulaymān ibn al-Jahm ibn Abī al-Jahm al-Anṣārī al-Ḥārithī, Abū al-Jahm al-Jawzajānī, a client of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib. He related from him, from Abū Masʿūd al-Badrī, and from Abū Zayd, the associate of Abū Hurayrah, and he is trustworthy. Perhaps he is the same man. The difficulty with this, however, is that they did not mention any narration of his from Abū Hurayrah; rather, they mentioned only his narration from Abū Zayd, Abū Hurayrah’s associate—as I have seen—whereas this chain states that he himself was among the associates of Abū Hurayrah. Allah knows best.
