Aslam: ‘Wahb ibn al-Aswad ibn Wahb related to me from his father, al-Aswad ibn Wahb, the maternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.’ Thus, Sadaqah al-Samin—who is weak—was substituted for al-Haytham ibn Humayd, who is trustworthy. He also inserted his son between Zayd ibn Aslam and Wahb ibn al-Aswad, reversing the names, and said: “Wahb ibn al-Aswad ibn Wahb, from his father al-Aswad ibn Wahb!”
Ibn Qani‘ also recorded it in his Mu‘jam. Al-Hafiz said: “Through Abu Bakr al-A‘yun, from ‘Amr ibn Abi Salamah, who said: ‘From Wahb ibn al-Aswad, the maternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,’ without saying, ‘from his father.’ He also inserted al-Hakam al-Ayli between Sadaqah and Zayd; and both al-Hakam and Sadaqah are weak.”
I say: It is therefore clear that this chain of transmission is weak and inconsistent; nevertheless, that does not preclude citing it as corroborative evidence. And Allah knows best.
1872 — “Thunder is an angel among the angels entrusted with the clouds. In his two hands—or in his hand—is a whip of fire with which he drives the clouds. The sound heard from it is his driving the clouds when he drives them, until they reach where they have been commanded.”
It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (4/129), Ahmad (1/274), Abu Ishaq al-Harbi in Gharib al-Hadith (5/123/1–2), al-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir (no. 12429), Ibn Bishran in al-Amali (24/27/2), and al-Diya al-Maqdisi in al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah (folios 206–207), through ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Walid al-‘Ijli, from Bukayr ibn Shihab al-Kufi—not al-Damighani—from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said:
Some Jews came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: “O Abu al-Qasim, we shall ask you about certain matters. If you answer us concerning them, we will follow you, affirm you, and believe in you.” He took from them the pledge that Israel had taken upon himself. They said: “Allah is Guardian over what we say.”
They said: “Tell us of the sign of a prophet.” He said: “His eyes sleep, but his heart does not sleep.” They said: “Then tell us how a woman conceives a female child and how she conceives a male child.” He said:
