I say: The rest of its narrators are trustworthy, although Hishām ibn ʿAmmār is somewhat weak. ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus al-Ramlī differed from him and said: Muḥammad ibn Shuʿayb ibn Shābūr narrated to us with the wording: “Guarding for one night in the cause of Allah is better than a man’s fasting and standing in prayer among his family for a thousand years; a year is three hundred and sixty days, and a day is like a thousand years.” Ibn Mājah narrated it (2/176).
Yet the first wording is preserved, for it has corroborating reports. Among them is the report of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to the same effect. Aḥmad narrated it (2/177) through Ibn Lahīʿah, who said: Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb narrated to us from Suwayd ibn Qays, from him. This chain of transmission is acceptable as corroborative evidence: its narrators are trustworthy, except that Ibn Lahīʿah had poor retention.
Another is the report of Salmān, attributed to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to the same effect. Aḥmad narrated it (5/440) through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Jamīl ibn Abī Maymūnah, from Ibn Abī Zakariyyā al-Khuzāʿī, from him. He then narrated it (5/441) by way of Ibn Thābit ibn Thawbān, who said: Ḥassān ibn ʿAṭiyyah narrated to me from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Zakariyyā, from a man, from Salmān.
In the first route, Ibn Isḥāq uses the ambiguous “from” formula. Ibn Abī Ḥātim included a biographical notice on Jamīl ibn Abī Maymūnah (1/1/519), citing also the narration of al-Layth ibn Saʿd from him, but mentioned neither criticism nor accreditation concerning him. The other route is fair, were it not for the unnamed man; perhaps he is Shuraḥbīl ibn al-Simṭ, for Muslim (6/51) and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr (6178) narrated it through two routes from him, from Salmān, to the same effect. Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it (6064, 6077, and 6134) through other routes from Salmān, to the same effect.
1867 — “Had I remained in prison as long as Joseph remained, and then the summons came to me, I would have answered it.” When the messenger came to him, he said: “Return to your master and ask him about the women who—”
