of three trustworthy narrators upon it, as mentioned above. Thus, Nāfiʿ has two chains of transmission in this hadith from Umm Salamah. Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr contradicted them, reporting it from Nāfiʿ, from Umm Salamah. Al-Nasāʾī recorded it. This is anomalous, contradicting the narration of the group.
The hadith also has another chain from Umm al-Ḥasan, from Umm Salamah: “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, measured for Fāṭimah a handspan from her waist-wrapper.” It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (3/47—Tuḥfah) and Abū Yaʿlā (folio 315/1), through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Umm al-Ḥasan. Al-Tirmidhī said: “Some narrated it from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from al-Ḥasan, from his mother, from Umm Salamah.”
I say: ʿAlī ibn Zayd is Ibn Judʿān, and he is weak. A group also narrated it from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Abū al-Muhazzim, from Abū Hurayrah: “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to Fāṭimah or Umm Salamah: ‘Your hem should be a cubit.’” It was recorded by Ibn Mājah (2/373) and Aḥmad (2/263 and 416).
Ḥabīb al-Muʿallim contradicted him, reporting it from Abū al-Muhazzim, from Abū Hurayrah, from ʿĀʾishah, with the same wording. It was recorded by Ibn Mājah and Aḥmad (6/75 and 123). Abū al-Muhazzim is abandoned. It is supported by a corroborating narration from Ibn ʿUmar: “The wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were granted a concession of a cubit for their hems; they would come to us, and we would measure a cubit for them with reeds.”
