—an excerpt thereof—and al-Ḥākim (4/203–204). Al-ʿUqaylī said: “The hadith of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAbdī is not preserved, and he is known only through it.”
I say: He is unknown, and ʿUbayd ibn Wāqid is weak. Thus, al-Ḥākim’s statement, “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” is incorrect. For this reason, al-Dhahabī rejected it, saying: “I say: ʿUthmān is unknown, and the report is rejected.”
- As for the report of Abū Saʿīd, Zayd ibn al-Ḥubāb narrated it to us: Saʿīd ibn Suwayd al-Sāmirī narrated to us; Khālid ibn Rabāḥ al-Baṣrī narrated to us, from Abū al-Ṣiddīq al-Nājī, from Abū Saʿīd, with the same wording. It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (4/204), concerning which both he and al-Dhahabī remained silent.
In my view, its chain of transmission is weak. Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from this Saʿīd ibn Suwayd. Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned him (2/1/29–30), through the narration of Ibn al-Ḥubāb alone, without citing any criticism or declaration of reliability concerning him. This is unlike Ibn Ḥibbān, who included him among al-Thiqāt (The Trustworthy Narrators), as stated in al-Lisān.
He was corroborated by Suwayd ibn Saʿīd al-Muʿaddil, who narrated to us: Khālid ibn Ziyād, the companion of al-Sābirī, narrated to us, from Abū al-Ṣiddīq, with the same wording. Al-Ṭabarānī recorded it in al-Awsaṭ (7540) and said: “It is not narrated from Abū Saʿīd except through this chain of transmission. ʿAbd al-Quddūs alone narrated it.”
That is what he said, but ʿAbd al-Quddūs is trustworthy, as are those above him, except for Suwayd ibn Saʿīd, whom I have not identified. Perhaps he is the Saʿīd ibn Suwayd mentioned in al-Ḥākim’s chain, whose name was reversed by one of al-Ṭabarānī’s narrators. I consider it unlikely that he is Suwayd ibn Saʿīd al-Anbārī, whose biography appears in al-Jarḥ (2/1/240), since he belongs to an earlier generation; Abū Zurʿah and Abū Ḥātim narrated from him. And Allah knows best.
- As for the report of Muzaydah, Ṭālib ibn Ḥujayr narrates it: Hūd ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me, from his grandfather, attributing it to the Prophet, with the same wording; and it includes an account.
