Al-Suyūṭī cited this hadith in al-Jāmiʿ through this narration of Ibn ʿAsākir, and al-Manāwī left it without comment. Yet the hadith is authentic: its first part was reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar, while its latter part has a corroborating report from the hadith of Anas and others. It was previously documented under no. 1224.
1829 — “Carry on, O Banu Arfidah, so that the Jews and Christians may know that there is latitude in our religion.”
Abū ʿUbayd recorded it in Gharīb al-Ḥadīth (102 / 2), and al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Usāmah in his Musnad (212—its supplementary section), through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq, from al-Shaʿbī, attributing it to the Prophet: “He passed by people engaged in a spear-dance and said”—then he mentioned the above report. He said: “While they were thus engaged, ʿUmar arrived; when they saw him, they became alarmed.”
I say: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq—who was Abū Shaybah al-Wāsiṭī—is weak. Baqiyyah, however, transmitted it with a connected chain from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ziyād, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq, from al-Shaʿbī, from ʿĀʾishah, with similar wording. Al-Daylamī recorded it (2 / 110). But Baqiyyah practised tadlīs and narrated it with an ambiguous “from.”
Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic, for it has come through another connected route from her. Aḥmad recorded it (6 / 116 and 233) through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Zinād, from his father, who said: ʿUrwah told me that ʿĀʾishah said: On that day, the Messenger of Allah said: “Let the Jews know that there is latitude in our religion. I have been sent with the upright and accommodating faith.” This is a good chain of transmission. Al-Ḥumaydī also recorded it (259) through Yaʿqūb ibn Zayd al-Taymī, from her, with the wording:
