But he was not alone in narrating it. Ibn Ṣāʿid also recorded it in his Ḥadīth collection (4 / 294 / 1–2) through Sharīk ibn Ṭāriq, from Farwah ibn Nawfal al-Ashjaʿī, who said: I heard ʿĀʾishah say: I heard the Messenger of Allah say this. Its chain of transmission through this Sharīk has been narrated with variations, and Ibn Ṣāʿid set forth his chains of transmission for it in that regard.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned Sharīk ibn Ṭāriq (2 / 1 / 363) without citing either criticism or commendation of him. It also has another route from ʿĀʾishah with similar wording, as well as two corroborating reports from the hadiths of Abū Hurayrah and Ibn ʿAbbās. They are documented in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl (1120).
1826 — “Khālid is one of the swords of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. What an excellent young man for the clan!”
Aḥmad (4 / 90), and through him Ibn ʿAsākir (5 / 272 / 1), narrated it with an authentic chain of transmission from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, who said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb appointed Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ over Syria and dismissed Khālid ibn al-Walīd. Khālid ibn al-Walīd then said: “He has sent you the trustee of this Ummah. I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘The trustee of this Ummah is Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ.’” Abū ʿUbaydah then said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say”—and he mentioned it.
I say: All its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of the two Shaykhs, except that ʿAbd al-Malik did not live to meet ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, for he was born three years before the end of ʿUthmān’s caliphate, may Allah be pleased with him. However, the hadith has corroborating reports that strengthen it. See hadith (1237) and al-Mishkāh (6257).
1827 — “Take the Quran from four: Ibn Masʿūd, Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, Muʿādh ibn Jabal, and Sālim, the freed slave of Abū Ḥudhayfah.”
Muslim (7 / 148), al-Tirmidhī (2 / 312), Ibn Saʿd (2 / 2 / 108), and Abū
