I say: Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (3 / 1 / 18): “He narrated from Anas, and narrated mursal reports from Ibn Masʿūd and Abū Umayyah al-Ḥubṭī. ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Jazarī, Shuʿbah, Muḥammad ibn Salamah, and ʿAttāb ibn Bashīr narrated from him.” Ibn Ḥibbān included him among the trustworthy narrators in al-Thiqāt (1 / 136); he is therefore trustworthy, on account of these trustworthy narrators’ reporting from him.
Al-Ḍiyāʾ then said: “Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī also narrated it from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khālid al-Qurashī, from ʿAbbād ibn Bashīr, from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, from Anas. Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Muslim ibn Wārah also narrated it from Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Sulaymān ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from Abū al-Wāṣil, from Anas.”
I say: Al-Silafī recorded it through the route of Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ in al-Fawāʾid al-Muntaqāh min Uṣūl Samāʿāt al-Raʾīs Abī ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī (2 / 165 / 1), with the wording: “...keep me settled in Islam until I meet You.” This Sulaymān ibn ʿAṭāʾ is Abū ʿAmr al-Jazarī, unanimously deemed weak. Yet this does not impugn the hadith’s established authenticity, since we have cited it through the route of Muḥammad ibn Salamah al-Ḥarrānī and Khaṭṭāb ibn al-Qāsim, both of whom are trustworthy. Their narration is therefore the one relied upon.
1824 — “Snakes are transformed jinn, just as monkeys and swine among the Children of Israel were transformed.”
Ibn Ḥibbān (1080), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (11946), and Ibn Abī Ḥātim in al-ʿIlal (2 / 290) recorded it through several routes from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Mukhtār, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet, who said it.
