“Among the hadiths concerning the supplication made upon sighting the new moon, this is perhaps one of those with the soundest chains of transmission; all of them have somewhat weak chains.”
I say: Sulayman ibn Sufyan is weak, as has already been mentioned, and Bilal ibn Yahya ibn Talhah is likewise. Perhaps for this reason al-Hakim, and then al-Dhahabi, remained silent regarding it and did not declare it authentic. Yet the hadith is good because of corroborating evidence; indeed, it is authentic owing to the abundance of its supporting reports, to which al-ʿUqayli alluded. However, these are only corroborating reports in a general sense; what fully corroborates it is the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, who said: … then he cited it, adding: “and success in that which You love and are pleased with.” It was recorded by al-Darimi (2/3–4), Ibn Hibban (2374), and al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (13330), through ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿUthman ibn Ibrahim, who said: My father narrated to me from his father and uncle, from Ibn ʿUmar.
Al-Haythami said (10/139): “ʿUthman ibn Ibrahim al-Hatibi has some weakness, while the rest of its narrators are reliable.” That is what he said. As for ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿUthman, al-Dhahabi said: “He narrated few reports, and Abu Hatim al-Razi declared him weak.” Ibn Hibban, however, included him among the reliable narrators.
It has another chain, with a different wording, from Ibn ʿUmar; it is referenced in al-Ḍaʿifah (3503). It also has another, abbreviated supporting report from Hudayr al-Sulami, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording but without the words, “My Lord and your Lord is Allah,” and with the addition: “tranquillity, well-being, and good provision.” It is referenced there (3504).
1817 — “The sweetness of this world is the bitterness of the Hereafter, and the bitterness of this world is the sweetness of the Hereafter.”
It was narrated by Ahmad (5/342), and on his authority by al-Hakim (4/310), and by Muhammad ibn al-ʿAbbas al-Bazzar in
