I was a man to whom Allah had granted a beautiful voice in reciting the Quran. Abdullah ibn Masʿud would send for me, and I would recite to him. When I had finished my recitation, he would say: “Give us more of this, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say”—then he cited it.
It is also found in al-Tabarani’s al-Muʿjam (no. 10023) through ʿAbd al-Ghaffar, with this chain; he was also known as Abu Salih al-Harrani. Ibn ʿAdi likewise narrated it (271/1) through Qays ibn al-Rabiʿ, from Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, with the same chain.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its routes revolve around Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, who was truthful but made errors, as stated in al-Taqrib. 1816 — “Whenever he sighted the new moon, he would say: ‘O Allah, bring it upon us with blessing, faith, safety, and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.’”
It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (2/256), al-Hakim (4/285), Ahmad (1/162), Abu Yaʿla (1/191), Ibn al-Sunni, who narrated it from him, in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah (635), al-Darimi (2/4), al-ʿUqayli (182), Ibn Abi ʿAsim in al-Sunnah (376), and al-Diyaʾ in al-Mukhtarah (1/279), through Sulayman ibn Sufyan, who said: Bilal ibn Yahya ibn Talhah ibn ʿUbayd Allah narrated to me from his father, from his grandfather, attributing it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
Al-Tirmidhi said: “Good and singular.” Al-ʿUqayli said regarding this Sulayman: “No one corroborates him in it,” and he reported from Ibn Maʿin that he was not trustworthy. Al-ʿUqayli then said:
