Sulaymān, Sayyār’s narrator, sometimes refers to him as “Sayyār Abu al-Ḥakam.” This is an error on his part, as Aḥmad and others stated. Yet in this hadith he did not err, as you can see; and had he erred, he would have made his error evident. Therefore, it cannot be deemed defective on account of a break in the chain, as is apparent.
Moreover, the hadith has numerous corroborating reports attesting to its authenticity, from ʿĀʾishah, ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, Sahl ibn Saʿd, Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Abu Hurayrah, and Saʿīd ibn Rāshid.
- As for the hadith of ʿĀʾishah, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar narrated it from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, from her, with the wording: “At the end of this Ummah, there will be people swallowed by the earth, transformed, and pelted with stones.” She said: “I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall we perish while righteous people are among us?’ He said: ‘Yes, when wickedness becomes widespread.’”
Al-Tirmidhī narrated it (2/28–29) and regarded it as gharīb because of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar—the elder al-ʿUmarī—for he had a poor memory.
- As for the hadith of ʿImrān, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Quddūs narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from Hilāl ibn Yasāf, from him, with wording similar to the preceding report, except that he said: “A Muslim man said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, when will that be?’ He said: ‘When female singers and musical instruments become widespread, and wine is drunk.’”
Al-Tirmidhī narrated it (2/33) and likewise regarded it as gharīb, because ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Quddūs was prone to error.
- As for the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, Abu Ṣakhr narrated it: Nāfiʿ related to me from him, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the same wording, adding: “That will be among those who deny divine decree.” Ibn Mājah (4061) and al-Tirmidhī (2/22) narrated it, and he said:
