1781 — “The good among you will depart, then the next best, until none of you remains but the like of this”—and he gestured to a date pit—“and that which contains no good.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Tarikh (2/1/309), as did Ibn Hibban (1832), al-Hakim (4/434), and al-Tabarani (4492), through Bakr ibn Sawadah al-Judhami, who said that Suhaym narrated to him from Ruwayfi' ibn Thabit al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, that dates or fresh dates were brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They ate from them until nothing remained but a date pit and what was of no use. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Do you know what this is? The good among you will depart...” and he mentioned the hadith.
Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him. That is what they said. Yet this Suhaym was mentioned by Ibn Abi Hatim (2/1/303) only through this narration of Bakr from him, and he did not cite any criticism or accreditation concerning him. As for Ibn Hibban, he listed him in al-Thiqat (The Reliable Narrators) (1/81), likewise on the basis of this narration. He also mentioned there: “Suhaym, the Qurashi freedman of Banu Zuhrah, who narrates from Abu Hurayrah; al-Zuhri narrated from him.”
I say: It seems possible to me that this is the same as the first one. Allah knows best. Nevertheless, the hadith is established, for it has a corroborating report from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the wording: “You will surely be picked over as dates are picked from a large dish: your best will surely go, and your worst will surely remain. So die, if you can.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Tarikh (Kuna, 25), as did Ibn Majah (4038) and al-Hakim (4/316 and 334), through Yunus ibn Yazid, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Humayd, the freedman of Musafi', who said: I heard Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, relate that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this. Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
