“Weak.”
I say: Nevertheless, the hadith is authentic, for it has a corroborating report from Zayd ibn Arqam, who said: “One day, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood among us to deliver a sermon at a watering place called Khumm, between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, extolled Him, exhorted and reminded us, then said: ‘Now then: O people, I am only a human being. Soon a messenger from my Lord will come to me, and I will answer. I am leaving among you two weighty matters. The first of them is the Book of Allah, containing guidance and light. Whoever holds fast to it and adheres to it will be upon guidance, whereas whoever neglects it will go astray. So hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it.’” He urged adherence to the Book of Allah and encouraged them to do so. Then he said: “And the members of my Household. I remind you of your duty to Allah regarding the members of my Household; I remind you of your duty to Allah regarding the members of my Household; I remind you of your duty to Allah regarding the members of my Household.”
It was narrated by Muslim (7/122–123), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Mushkil al-Āthār (4/368), Aḥmad (4/366–367), Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim in al-Sunnah (1550 and 1551), and al-Ṭabarānī (5026), through Yazīd ibn Ḥayyān al-Tamīmī, from him.
Aḥmad (4/371), al-Ṭabarānī (5040), and al-Ṭaḥāwī then narrated, through ʿAlī ibn Rabīʿah, who said: “I met Zayd ibn Arqam as he was entering to see al-Mukhtār, or coming out from his presence, and I said to him: ‘Did you hear the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “I am leaving among you the two weighty matters—the Book of Allah and my family”?’ He said: ‘Yes.’” Its chain of transmission is authentic; its narrators are among those of the authentic collections.
It has other routes with al-Ṭabarānī (4969–4971, 4980–4982, and 5040), some of which are also found with al-Ḥākim (3/109, 148, and 533). He and al-Dhahabī deemed some of them authentic. There is another corroborating report from the hadith of ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, attributed to the Prophet:
