“This is a rejected hadith.” He also said: “Ibn Jurayj cannot be relied upon for this”—meaning, he cannot be relied upon to narrate a hadith such as this.
That is what he said, without mentioning any apparent hidden defect. In any case, his statement indicates that the defect lay with Muḥammad rather than Ibn Jurayj. Nevertheless, one does not feel fully assured by such an ambiguous declaration of defectiveness. One could have relied on ʿAbd al-Razzāq’s transmission of it as a report halted at Ibn ʿAbbās, were it not for the agreement of the two trustworthy narrators in attributing it to the Prophet. And Allah knows best.
Concerning this hadith, al-Haythamī said in al-Majmaʿ (2 / 91): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr, and its narrators are trustworthy.”
- “Any man from my community whom I insult or curse in my anger—for I am but a descendant of Adam, and I become angry as they become angry, while I was sent only as a mercy to all worlds—then make it a blessing for them on the Day of Resurrection.”
Abū Dāwūd (4659), Aḥmad (5 / 437), and al-Ṭabarānī (6156, 6157) narrated it through ʿUmar ibn Qays al-Māṣir, from ʿAmr ibn Abī Qurrah, who said:
“Hudhayfah was in al-Madāʾin, and he would mention things which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had said in anger to certain of his Companions. Some people who heard this from Hudhayfah would then go to Salmān and report Hudhayfah’s words to him. Salmān would say, ‘Hudhayfah knows better what he is saying.’ They would return to Hudhayfah and say to him, ‘We mentioned what you said to Salmān, but he neither affirmed you nor denied you.’
“Hudhayfah then went to Salmān while he was in a vegetable garden, and said, ‘O Salmān, what prevents you from affirming what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?’ Salmān replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would become angry and, in anger, say things to certain of his Companions; and he would be pleased and, when pleased, say things to certain of his Companions. Will you not desist before you [make] some men love certain men and others hate them, and before you bring about disagreement and division? You certainly know that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered a sermon and said:’”—then he mentioned the hadith—“‘By Allah, you must desist, or I shall write to ʿUmar.’”
I say: The wording is that of Abū Dāwūd; it is more complete, and its chain of transmission is authentic, all of its narrators being trustworthy.
