Al-Ḥākim narrated it through ʿAttāb ibn Muḥammad ibn Shawdhab: Kaʿb ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related to us ...
I say: Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned this Kaʿb (3/2/162), but did not state any criticism or accreditation concerning him. As for ʿAttāb ibn Muḥammad ibn Shawdhab, I have not identified him.
1754 — “Any shepherd entrusted with a flock who betrays it will be in the Fire.”
Aḥmad (5/25) and Muslim (6/9) narrated it, though he did not give its exact wording, from Suwādah ibn Abī al-Aswad, from his father, from Maʿqil ibn Yasār, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
Aḥmad and Muslim then narrated—and likewise al-Bukhārī in The Book of Judgments—through al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, from Maʿqil ibn Yasār, something similar to it, but more complete. Refer to it in al-Targhīb (3/141). I only sought to cite it through this route because it is free from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī’s ambiguous use of the “from” formula; thus, it is a strong corroborating report for it. All praise is due to Allah for His granting of success.
1755 — “Any servant who commits something Allah has forbidden, then has its fixed legal penalty carried out upon him, that penalty expiates that sin for him.”
Al-Ḥākim (4/388)—whose wording is cited here—al-Dārimī (2/182), Aḥmad (5/214 and 215), and al-Ṭabarānī (3728, 3731, and 3732) narrated it through Usāmah ibn Zayd, who said that Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir told him that Ibn Khuzaymah ibn Thābit told him, from his father Khuzaymah ibn Thābit, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. Al-Ḥākim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic.” Al-Dhahabī concurred with him.
