“While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he caught sight of a group of people and said, ‘What have these people gathered around?’ He was told, ‘A grave which they are digging.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was alarmed and hurried ahead of his Companions until he reached the grave and knelt beside it. Al-Barāʾ said: I came round in front of him to see what he was doing, and he wept until his tears moistened the earth. Then he turned to us and said,” and he quoted the foregoing.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from Muḥammad ibn Mālik, namely Abū al-Mughīrah al-Jawzajānī, the client of al-Barāʾ. Ibn Abī Ḥātim (4/1/88) related from his father: “There is no harm in him.” Ibn Ḥibbān was inconsistent concerning him, listing him in both of his books, al-Thiqāt (The Trustworthy Narrators) and al-Ḍuʿafāʾ (The Weak Narrators). He said of him: “He made many errors; his report cannot be used as evidence when he narrates alone.” In the first of these two books, he said: “He did not hear anything from al-Barāʾ.”
I say: Al-Ḥāfiẓ refuted this with what Aḥmad related immediately after this hadith through the same chain, from Muḥammad ibn Mālik, who said: “I saw al-Barāʾ wearing a gold ring, and people would say to him, ‘Why do you wear a gold ring, when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade it?’ Al-Barāʾ replied: ‘While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, there was booty before him which he was distributing—captives and miscellaneous goods. He distributed it until only this ring remained. He raised his gaze and looked at his Companions, then lowered it; then he raised his gaze and looked at them, then lowered it; then he raised his gaze and looked at them and said, “Where is al-Barāʾ?” I came to him and sat before him. He took the ring, grasped my wrist, and said, “Take it; wear what Allah and His Messenger have clothed you with.”’ Al-Barāʾ would then say: ‘How can you command me to remove that of which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Wear what Allah and His Messenger have clothed you with”?’”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: “This disproves Ibn Ḥibbān’s assertion that he did not hear anything from al-Barāʾ—unless Ibn Ḥibbān considered him untruthful. In that case, he should not have included him in the book al-Thiqāt.”
