In his Talkhīṣ, al-Dhahabī said: “Al-Ḥākim did not declare it authentic, and Muslim is abandoned.”
- The hadith of Buraydah, which has three routes from him:
The first: from Ibn ʿAbbās, from him, who said: “I went out with ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with him, to Yemen and found him somewhat harsh toward me. When I returned to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, I mentioned ʿAlī and spoke disparagingly of him. The Messenger of Allah’s face began to change, and he said: ‘O Buraydah, am I not closer to the believers than their own selves?’ I replied, ‘Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘Whoever has me as his patron has ʿAlī as his patron.’”
Al-Nasāʾī, al-Ḥākim (3/110), and Aḥmad (5/347) recorded it through the route of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Abī Ghaniyyah, who said: Al-Ḥakam informed us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the conditions of the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Al-Ḥākim’s authentication of it according to the condition of Muslim alone is deficient. Ibn Abī Ghaniyyah is pronounced with a fatḥah on the dotted ghayn, a kasrah on the nūn, and a doubled yāʾ. In the two aforementioned sources, it appears as “ʿUyaynah,” but this is a scribal corruption; that was his grandfather’s name, while his father’s name was Ḥumayd.
The second: from Ibn Buraydah, from his father, “that he passed by a gathering whose members were speaking ill of ʿAlī. He stopped by them and said: ‘I had harboured something against ʿAlī, and Khālid ibn al-Walīd felt likewise. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me on a detachment under ʿAlī’s command, and we acquired captives. ʿAlī took a slave-girl from the khums for himself, whereupon Khālid ibn al-Walīd said, “There you have it!” When we came before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, I began telling him what had happened, then said: “ʿAlī took a slave-girl from the khums.” I was a man who habitually kept his head bowed; then I raised my head and saw that the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had changed. He then said…” He then cited the first part of the hadith.
