al-Shihāb (11/2/1), through Sharīk, from ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it.
I say: This is a good chain for purposes of corroboration. Its narrators are trustworthy, except that Sharīk—ibn ʿAbd Allāh, the judge—had poor retention. However, the hadith is authentic, for its second half is found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, al-Nasāʾī, Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, and others, through another route from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh. It was likewise narrated by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in al-Ahwāl (91/2), al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān (2/113/2), Aḥmad (3674, 4200, 4213, and 4214), and others. The first half also has corroborating reports in the hadiths of Abū Hurayrah and Tamīm al-Dārī, recorded by Abū Dāwūd and others; it is documented in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd (810–812). Tamīm’s hadith was also narrated by al-Ṭabarānī (1255 and 1256).
1749 — “The first to alter my sunnah will be a man from Banū Umayyah.”
Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim recorded it in al-Awāʾil (7/2): ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muʿādh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAwf narrated to us, from al-Muhājir Abū Makhlad, from Abū al-ʿĀliyah, from Abū Dharr, who said to Yazīd ibn Abī Sufyān: “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him...” and he then cited it.
I say: This is a good chain. Its narrators are trustworthy and were used by the two Shaykhs, except for al-Muhājir—who was Ibn Makhlad, Abū Makhlad. Ibn Maʿīn said: “Sound.” Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt. Al-Sājī said: “Truthful.” Abū Ḥātim said: “His hadith is weak; he is not especially strong and is not precise, though his hadith may be recorded.”
