Abd al-Rahman ibn Saʿd al-Madani narrated from Sahl ibn Abi Umamah ibn Sahl, and Abdullah ibn Wahb heard from him. Ibn Maʿin said: “I do not know him.” Accordingly, the designation al-Mazini in al-Mustadrak is a corruption of al-Madani. And Allah knows best.
Note: Our colleague al-Salafi, in his commentary on al-Tabarani’s al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (6/88), attributed this hadith to page 77 of the second volume of al-Mustadrak. However, that page contains a different hadith, worded: “Whoever sincerely asks Allah for martyrdom, Allah will grant him the ranks of the martyrs, even if he dies in his bed.” He said: “Authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs.” Al-Dhahabi concurred.
I say: Its chain of transmission is exactly the same as that of this hadith, except that it correctly gives Abd al-Rahman ibn Shurayh. And Allah knows best.
1743 — “O Abu Turab, shall I not tell you of the two most wretched men?” We said: “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah!” He said: “The little red man of Thamud, who hamstrung the she-camel, and the one who will strike you here”—meaning Ali’s head—“until this is drenched in blood”—meaning his beard.
Al-Tahawi narrated it in Mushkil al-Athar (1/351–352), as did al-Nasaʾi in al-Khasaʾis (p. 28), al-Hakim (3/140–141), and Ahmad (4/263), through the route of Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Yazid ibn Muhammad ibn Khaytham al-Muharibi narrated to me from Muhammad ibn Kaʿb al-Qurazi, from Muhammad ibn Khaytham, from Ammar ibn Yasir, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
“Ali and I were companions during the expedition of Dhu al-Ushayrah. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived there and stayed there, we saw some men of Banu Mudlij working at a spring of theirs in a palm grove. Ali said to me, ‘O Abu al-Yaqzan, would you like us to go to these people and see how they work?’ So we went to them and watched them working for a while. Then sleep overcame us, and Ali and I went off and lay down amid some date palms on dusty ground, and we fell asleep. By Allah, no one woke us except the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stirring us with his foot. We had become covered in dust from that ground. Seeing the dust upon him, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘O Abu Turab!’ Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Shall I not...’” He then mentioned it.
The wording is al-Hakim’s, and he said:
