“Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him, and it is as they both said, despite Ibn Abi Hatim’s having deemed it defective (2/232–233) because of a missing link in the chain. Another supporting report is from Abu Hurayrah and others; it has already preceded under no. 1327.
1741 — “The people of Hell are every coarse, grasping, arrogant hoarder and withholder; and the people of Paradise are the weak and downtrodden.”
Al-Hakim (2/499) and Ahmad (2/114) narrated it through the route of Abdullah—that is, Ibn al-Mubarak—who said: Musa ibn Ali ibn Rabah informed us: “I heard my father narrate from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,” and he mentioned it. The wording is Ahmad’s. Al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabi concurred with him, and it is as they both said.
Ahmad then said (2/169): Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated to us; Musa narrated to us with the same chain, in abbreviated form, with the wording: “He said, in describing the people of Hell: Every coarse, grasping, arrogant hoarder and withholder.” Its chain of transmission is likewise authentic.
Concerning this hadith, al-Mundhiri said in al-Targhib (4/17): “Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Juʿshum, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘O Suraqah, shall I not inform you about the people of Paradise and the people of Hell?’ I said: ‘Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘As for the people of Hell, they are every coarse...’” He then cited it, omitting the words, “a hoarder and withholder,” and said: “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat with a good chain of transmission, and al-Hakim, who said: ‘Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.’”
I say: Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir (6589), as did al-Hakim (3/619), through the route of Abdullah ibn Salih, who said: Musa ibn Ali ibn Rabah al-Lakhmi narrated to me from his father, from Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Juʿshum, with it. Both he and al-Dhahabi remained silent about it. This is more weighty than what al-Mundhiri reported from him—that he said:
