Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Asbat ibn Nasr said: Al-Suddi related from Mus'ab ibn Sa'd, from Sa'd, who said: “At the conquest of Mecca, Abdullah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh took refuge with Uthman ibn Affan. Uthman brought him and stood him before the Prophet, saying, ‘Messenger of Allah, accept Abdullah’s pledge of allegiance.’ The Prophet raised his head and looked at him three times, refusing each time. After the third time, he accepted his pledge, then turned to his Companions and said: ‘Was there not among you a discerning man who would have risen to kill this man when he saw me withholding my hand from accepting his pledge?’ They said, ‘We did not know what you intended, Messenger of Allah. Why did you not signal to us with your eye?’ He then repeated the statement cited above.”

Al-Hakim said: “It is authentic according to Muslim’s conditions.” Al-Dhahabi agreed, and their assessment is correct, although some hadith authorities criticized Asbat ibn Nasr and Ahmad ibn al-Mufaddal with respect to their retention. However, the hadith has a corroborating report that strengthens it. It is narrated by Nafi' Abu Ghalib, from Anas, who said: “I fought alongside the Prophet at Hunayn. The polytheists came out and charged against us, until we saw our horses behind our backs. Among them was a man who charged at us, striking us down and crushing us. But Allah defeated them, and people began to be brought to the Prophet to pledge allegiance to Islam.

“One of the Prophet’s Companions said: ‘I have vowed that, if Allah brings us the man who has been crushing us today, I shall strike off his head.’ The Messenger of Allah remained silent. Then the man was brought forward, and when he saw the Messenger of Allah, he said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I have repented to Allah.’ The Messenger of Allah withheld acceptance of his pledge so that the other man might fulfill his vow. The man kept presenting himself before the Messenger of Allah, hoping that he would order him killed, yet he was in awe of the Messenger of Allah and hesitant to kill him. When the Messenger of Allah saw that he would not act, he accepted the man’s pledge. The man said, ‘Messenger of Allah, what of my vow?’ He replied: ‘I withheld acceptance from him only so that you might fulfill your vow.’ The man said, ‘Messenger of Allah, why did you not signal to me?’ The Prophet said: ‘It is not fitting for a prophet to make a covert signal with his eyes.’”
