And the hadith is similar in meaning to the hadith: “Keep to a moderate course, for whoever makes this religion hard upon himself will be overcome by it,” and to other reports of similar meaning. I have traced its sources in Zilāl al-Jannah fī Takhrīj Kitāb al-Sunnah by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim (98). It also has a supporting report, no. 1760.
1710 — “Only one who has been forgiven finds rest.”
It has been narrated from ʿĀʾishah and Bilāl al-Ḥabashī, as well as in a mursal report from Muḥammad ibn ʿUrwah.
- As for the hadith of ʿĀʾishah, Ibn Lahīʿah narrated to us from Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“It was said, ‘Messenger of Allah, so-and-so has died and found rest!’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said the above words.”
It was recorded by Aḥmad (6/69 and 102) and Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (8/290), who said: “It is a singular report from Ibn Lahīʿah’s narrations; al-Muʿāfā alone transmitted it, according to what Sulaymān said.” He meant his shaykh, al-Ṭabarānī. But this is not as he said, for Aḥmad narrated it from Ibn Lahīʿah through other routes as well. Its narrators are trustworthy apart from Ibn Lahīʿah, whose memory was poor; however, his hadith is strengthened by what follows, especially since al-Bazzār also recorded it through another route, whose narrators are trustworthy, as al-Haythamī said. Further clarification concerning it will follow.

The hadith of Bilāl was narrated by Ibn ʿAsākir, as cited in al-Jāmiʿ.

As for the hadith of Muḥammad ibn ʿUrwah, Ibn al-Mubārak recorded it in al-Zuhd (251): Yūnus ibn Yazīd informed us from Abū Muqrin, who said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUrwah narrated to us, saying: “A woman from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) died, and they were laughing at her. Bilāl then said, ‘Woe to her! She has found rest …’” The hadith.
