I then found that al-Mundhirī cited the hadith in al-Targhīb (4/106), from Ibn Masʿūd, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording. He said—and al-Haythamī (10/237) followed him: “Al-Bazzār narrated it with a good chain of transmission.”
1704 — “This is part of the clothing of the disbelievers, so do not wear it.”
Muslim (6/144), Aḥmad (2/162, 207, and 211), and Ibn Saʿd (4/265) narrated it through various routes from Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī, from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, who said: Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to me that Ibn Maʿdān informed him that Jubayr ibn Nufayr informed him, from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw him wearing two safflower-dyed garments and said: thus he mentioned it.
Among Aḥmad’s chains is: Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī, with this chain. Al-Ḥākim also narrated it through this route (4/190), except that he did not mention Jubayr ibn Nufayr in its chain of transmission. He said: “Authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, though neither of them recorded it!” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, but they were mistaken in claiming this as an omission on Muslim’s part.
ʿAlī ibn al-Mubārak also followed him in narrating it from Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr with this chain, as recorded by Muslim. Muslim also narrated it through Ṭāwūs, from Ibn ʿAmr, who said: “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw me wearing two safflower-dyed garments and said, ‘Did your mother order you to wear this?’ I said, ‘Shall I wash them?’ He said, ‘Rather, burn them.’”
Al-Ḥākim also narrated it through another route from Ibn ʿAmr with similar wording, adding at its end: “So I did.” And he said:
