“I seek to win them over to Islam.” It was reported by Abū al-ʿAbbās Ibn ʿUqdah, the hadith master, as cited in al-Iṣābah. This addition, in this wording, accords better with the context, since it indicates that gifts were given to people other than Furāt, whereas he was given nothing, out of confidence in his faith. Furāt was only pardoned and not executed in order to win over his heart. Moreover, this addition has a hidden defect as well: Zakariyyā ibn Abī Zāʾidah used an ambiguous ‘from’ formulation, and he practised tadlīs. If it is said: “The same applies to Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī, who also practised tadlīs; all the chains revolve around him, as mentioned above, and he too used an ambiguous ‘from’ formulation?” I say: Yes; but their statement that al-Thawrī was the most reliable of narrators from Abū Isḥāq perhaps indicates that he narrated from him only what he explicitly stated having heard directly, as they said concerning Shuʿbah’s narrations from him. And Allah knows best.
1702 — “Moses said: ‘My Lord, show me Adam, who expelled us and himself from Paradise.’ So Allah showed him Adam, and he said: ‘Are you our father Adam?’ Adam replied: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Are you the one into whom Allah breathed of His spirit, taught all the names, and commanded the angels, who then prostrated to you?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Then what made you expel us and yourself from Paradise?’ Adam said to him: ‘And who are you?’ He replied: ‘I am Moses.’ He said: ‘Are you the prophet of the Children of Israel to whom Allah spoke from behind a veil, appointing no messenger from among His creation between you and Him?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Did you not find that this had been decreed in Allah’s Book before I was created?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Then why do you blame me for something which Allah Most High had decreed before me?’ At that, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in the argument; Adam prevailed over Moses in the argument.’”
It was reported by Abū Dāwūd (4702), and from him by al-Bayhaqī in al-Asmāʾ wa’l-Ṣifāt (p. 193), and Ibn Khuzaymah
