I (al-Albānī) add: That same compiler, together with Abū Yaʿlā (folio 45/1) and al-Ḍiyāʾ in al-Mukhtārah (1/278), also cited the report through Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā, from Mūsā and ʿĪsā—the two sons of Ṭalḥah—on the authority of their father, Ṭalḥah:
“The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to an uninformed Bedouin, ‘Ask him who the one is who has fulfilled his pledge.’ They themselves did not dare to question the Prophet out of reverence and awe. The Bedouin asked, and the Prophet turned away; he asked again, and again the Prophet turned away. Meanwhile I looked in through a door of the mosque wearing green clothes. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me, he said, ‘Where is the one who was asking about the person who has fulfilled his pledge?’ The Bedouin replied, ‘Here I am, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘He is among those who have fulfilled their pledge.’”
Al-Ḍiyāʾ remarked, “This is a ḥasan gharīb (good, singular) ḥadīth.”
I comment: Its chain is ḥasan; its transmitters are trustworthy and are all narrators found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim—except that some scholars criticised Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā for the reliability of his memory. Even so, his narrations do not fall below the rank of ḥasan.
Nor was he the sole transmitter of the report. Al-Ṭabarānī also recorded it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/13/2) through Sulaymān ibn Ayyūb, who said, “My father related it to me from my grandfather, from Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah, from his father,” who said: Whenever the Prophet ﷺ saw me he would say,
“Whoever wishes to look at a martyr walking upon the face of the earth, let him look at Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbaydillāh.”
I add: This chain is weak, for Sulaymān is known for manākir (rejected reports). Ibn Mahdī said, “Most of his ḥadīths are not corroborated.”
Al-Haythamī states in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (9/149): “Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it; in the chain is Sulaymān ibn Ayyūb al-Ṭalḥī, whom some deemed reliable while others declared weak, and there are several narrators in the chain whom I do not know.”
The ḥadīth also has a sound mursal corroboration with the wording:
