Amr ibn Muhammad al-ʿAnqazi corroborated him, saying: Ibn Idris narrated to us with the same chain. Al-Nasaʾi narrated it (1/289), and its chain is likewise authentic. Thus, this is a strong corroborating transmission from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar for Abu Hudhayfah’s narration from al-Thawri, from Saʿd ibn Ibrahim. And Allah knows best.
It also has another route, through the narration of ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from Mujahid, from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Saʿd was given a squeeze in the grave, so I supplicated Allah to relieve him of it.” Al-Hakim narrated it (3/206) and declared it authentic, and al-Dhahabi concurred with him! But ʿAtaʾ became confused in his later years, and he added the supplication to it.
Ibn Lahiʿah contradicted him in its chain of transmission, saying: from ʿUqayl, who heard Saʿd ibn Ibrahim reporting from ʿAʾishah, the daughter of Saʿd, that she narrated to him from ʿAʾishah, the Mother of the Believers, attributed to the Prophet, in similar wording. Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat (1/82/1) and said: “Ibn Lahiʿah alone narrated it.”
I say: He had poor retention. It also has a supporting report from the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbas, attributed to the Prophet, in similar wording. Al-Tabarani narrated it (1/81/2), and in al-Kabir (10827 and 12975), through the route of Ziyad, the client of Ibn ʿAbbas, from him. Al-Haythami said in al-Majmaʿ (3/46–47): “Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir and al-Awsat, and its narrators have been deemed reliable.”
I say: Al-Tabarani has it through two routes:
