I say: This is a weak chain of transmission. This ʿAmr ibn Dinar is weak, as stated in al-Taqrib and elsewhere.
However, the hadith has supporting reports that attest to its authenticity.
The first is from Abu Hurayrah: the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The food of two is sufficient for three, and the food of three is sufficient for four.” Malik transmitted it (2/928/20), and al-Bukhari transmitted it from him (3/496), as did Muslim (6/132) and al-Tirmidhi (1/335), who said: “Good and authentic,” through Malik, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-Aʿraj, from him, with this wording. Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah corroborated him in narrating it from Abu al-Zinad. Ahmad transmitted it (2/244). Ahmad then transmitted it (2/407) from ʿAli ibn Zayd, from someone who heard Abu Hurayrah.
The second is from Jabir, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “The food of one is sufficient for two, the food of two is sufficient for four, and the food of four is sufficient for eight.” Muslim, Ibn Majah (3254), al-Darimi (2/100), and Ahmad (3/301 and 382) transmitted it from Abu al-Zubayr, who heard Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah. Abu Sufyan corroborated him in narrating it from Jabir. Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, and Ahmad (3/301 and 315) transmitted it.
The third is from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “The food of two is sufficient for four, and the food of four is sufficient for eight. So gather around it, and do not disperse from it.”
