and the Qarmatians. For this reason, the British supported him and aided him against the Muslims, while he himself would say: “It is forbidden for Muslims to fight the British!” This was but one of his many lies and misleading falsehoods. Numerous books have been written refuting him and demonstrating his departure from the community of Muslims. Whoever wishes to know the true nature of their affair should consult them.
1684 — “An Arab gives me a gift, and I compensate him for it as much as I can; then he finds it displeasing and continues to resent me. By Allah, after this occasion I shall not accept a gift from any Arab except a Qurashī, an Anṣārī, a Thaqafī, or a Dawsī.”
Al-Bukhārī recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (596), and al-Tirmidhī transmitted it from him (2/330)—the wording is al-Tirmidhī’s, and it is more complete—from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: “A man from Banū Fazārah presented the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with a camel from among the camels they had acquired at al-Ghābah. He compensated him for it with some recompense, but the man was displeased. I then heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say from this pulpit...” He then cited it.
He said: “This is a good hadith, and it is sounder than the hadith of Yazīd ibn Hārūn from Ayyūb.”
I say: He is referring to what he had recorded immediately before it: “Aḥmad ibn Manīʿ narrated to us: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us: Ayyūb informed me, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, with some abridgment.” He said: “It has been narrated from Abū Hurayrah through more than one route. Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrates from Ayyūb Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, who is Ayyūb ibn Miskīn, also said to be Ibn Abī Miskīn. Perhaps this hadith, which he narrated from Ayyūb, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī. And he is Ayyūb Abū al-ʿAlāʾ.”
I say: This is how it appears in the original Bulaq edition, and there is a problem with the wording. I then consulted a copy of al-Aḥwadhī and found the wording there to be as follows:
